40 × 30 × 20 cm cabin bag: the size each airline allows

Most European airlines now include only a small free bag that goes under the seat in front of you. Its maximum size varies: 40 × 30 × 20 cm at Ryanair, Transavia, Vueling and Volotea, 45 × 36 × 20 cm at easyJet, 40 × 30 × 15 cm at Air France.

Enter your bag's dimensions, handles and pockets included. The tool compares each side with each airline's limit, whichever way round the bag goes.

Made for it

It fits under the seat.

The Sailor Bag XL measures 40 × 30 × 20 cm and weighs 900 g. Waterproof marine faux leather, YKK zip closure, large zip pocket, bottle sleeve. Made in France.

How to measure your bag

  1. Measure the bag full, the way you will carry it: a soft bag that bulges gets deeper.
  2. Count handles, wheels and outer pockets: easyJet and Transavia include them in the limit.
  3. Compare the longest side with the longest limit, then the other two: that is what the tool above does.
  4. If in doubt, keep a margin: at the gate, the bag has to fit in the airline's sizer.

Questions

How big can a free cabin bag be?

It depends on the airline: 40 × 30 × 20 cm at Ryanair, Transavia, Vueling and Volotea; 45 × 36 × 20 cm at easyJet; 40 × 30 × 15 cm for Air France's small bag. In every case it must fit under the seat in front of you.

Does a handbag count as a cabin bag?

Yes: on low-cost airlines your handbag is your free bag. Transavia even names it as an example of a 40 × 30 × 20 cm hand-luggage item.

What if my bag is too big?

It can be sent to the hold for a fee at the gate. At Vueling, for example, that costs between €60 and €75.

Does the Sailor Bag XL fit under the seat?

It measures 40 × 30 × 20 cm: exactly the limit at Ryanair, Transavia, Vueling and Volotea, and under easyJet's. On Air France its 20 cm depth exceeds the small bag's 15 cm, so it travels as a cabin bag.
